Another tipp in popular culture - the Asia Film Festival takes place in Graz - yesterday I watched two Animes. It showed me that there are still fantastic productions being made out there, well, mainly in Japan. Forget the clischees of big eyed-Anime-girls - watch those two movies and you will see that there is a different industrie.
Movie number one was "Paprika". Watch the trailer here - this is how Wikipedia summs it up:"In the future, a revolutionary new psychotherapy treatment called PT has been invented. Through a device called the "DC Mini" it is able to act as a "dream detective" to view inside people's dreams and explore their unconscious thoughts. Before the government can pass a bill authorizing the use of such advanced psychiatric technology, one of the prototypes is stolen, sending the research facility into an uproar. In the wrong hands, the potential misuse of the device could be devastating, allowing the user to completely annihilate a dreamer's personality while they are asleep. Renowned scientist, Dr. Atsuko Chiba, enters the dream world under her exotic alter-ego - "Paprika" - assisted by Detective Kogawa Toshimi (the victim of bizarre recurring dreams), in an attempt to discover who is behind the plot to undermine the new invention."

The movie was amazing - its one of those mind breaking, existence doubting movies like "Ghost in the Shell 1+2". But its easier to understand, and the animation is excellent.
Movie number two was Tekkon kinkreet. Watch the trailer here. Its about two boys, Black and White, who live in a surreal, crazy city - they are called "cats" there becasue they live like stray cats - the jump over roofs, climb up neon signs and rule the streets. Black cares for White, who is slightly younger and still has his childish innocence in him. Hoever, a gangster plans to built a gigantic amusement park and Black decides to fight them.
This is not a childrens movie at all - its very violent and also very depressing sometimes. SLowly it becomes clear that this movie is not about some childish fight gangster against kids - its brutal, and Black starts killing people and his dark side gets stronger and stronger. This is a movie about becoming currupted with blind madness and about innocence. The movie can be very exhausting, but I recomment it in any case.
The pictures are unbelievable. The colors, the characters, the animation - the 3D/2D... combination works perfectly. Its a very uncommon graphi style for japanese animation - every single picture looks like a perfect illustration.
